Before Adopting Australian Labradoodle Puppies North Carolina Dog Lovers Should Know These Facts

By Judy Sullivan

The Australian Labradoodle is a loving, intelligent family dog that makes a great companion. A hybrid cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, this dog is largely hypoallergenic and is the perfect choice for people who suffer with allergies. However, before looking for a breeder of Australian Labradoodle puppies North Carolina pet lovers should learn what this animal needs to stay happy and healthy.

They first appeared in 1980's Australia when a breeder named Wally Conron bred a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle to create an animal that possessed the low-shedding nature of the latter and superior temperament of the former. Some of these pups became guide dogs for the blind, and they are still used today to assist people with physical and mental disabilities.

These dogs can be somewhat of a surprise to breeders as their characteristics may vary considerably. The size of the animal depends on the size of the Poodle used in breeding, males are generally taller and heavier than females. Three types of coats are possible; fleece which is wavy, wool which is curly, and less commonly, hair which is straight and less desirable because it sheds. Colors may be solid or patterned in these shades; chalk, silver, black, red, apricot, parchment, cream, cafe, gold, and chocolate.

They are the perfect playmates for children and usually get along with other animals. Since they are very intelligent, training is generally not hard, but the owner must clearly assert that he or she is "pack leader" from the beginning. The Australian Labradoodle is by nature loyal, gentle, and eager to please.

An energetic dog which requires sufficient exercise each day, Labradoodles will be happiest with a fair-sized yard to run about in. Even living in an apartment should be acceptable if the dog is taken for several long walks daily. They enjoy playing games with their human masters such as fetch, and if there is a swimming pool, they are more than happy to show off their natural swimming ability.

Although they can be considered healthy in general, there are some disorders Australian Labradoodles are prone to. The main threats are progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia, these should be screened for before breeding a dog. However with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and routine veterinary care, they can live to be 13 to 15 years old.

Regular grooming, in particular those with a curly coat is needed if the animal is to look its best. Daily brushing helps prevent matting and is essential for this dog which sheds very little. A professional grooming should be done every month or so, and a trim is recommended two or three times each year.

Major breeding associations do not currently acknowledge the Australian Labradoodle as a true breed, however some breeders are seeking to change this and get the recognition they believe this dog deserves. When searching for Australian Labradoodle puppies North Carolina adoptive families can either choose those which are born to two Labradoodles, or those which are the result of a Labrador and Poodle union, which some breeders prefer for the greater diversity, although either pup can be a great pet.
