Why Consider Military Dog Adoption

By Marissa Velazquez

Having a dog brings wonderful feelings to the owner be it an adult or a child. One may choose to bring up a dog from a puppy and watch it grow up or simply adopt one that is an adult. Dogs make wonderful companions for children. Other than getting a dog from shelter homes, one can chose military dog adoption that have retired from active duty.

Adoption is quite inexpensive if you compare it to buying and bringing up a puppy. When you adopt, you save the life of that dog and keep them from being euthanized. Observing the traits of an adult dog is much easier compared to that of a puppy as they have developed fully. You may get a sweet looking puppy only for it to develop into a dog with very queer characteristics.

One does not need to take the dog through house training since they have undergone extensive training and are good with taking instructions from the owner. They are well trained on obedience, chewing, hyperactivity among other skills. They in general mix well with children and chances of the kids being harmed are minimal.

In general, the entire process is much cheaper compared to buying a puppy and raising it. You don't have to incur enormous veterinary cost associated with raising a dog. For those who have checked the prices of good quality dogs like the ones in military, many cannot afford them.

Military dogs even when retired are still valuable and the foster home will receive lifetime support for the dog. These may include free consultations with specific behavioral problems. They can even participate in social events for the new owners and the pets. They also get special rates veterinary services.

It is comparatively easy to adopt if one looks at the cost of raring a dog from zero. Adopting them minimizes the chances of them being killed for population control. This way you save them from the cruelty of being killed and you also get a friend who has been well trained.

The process of adopting a dog from the military is not any difficult as may be feared. In the year 2000 a law was passed allowing retired dogs to be eligible for adoption into civilian life. A person just has to prove they are capable of caring for the dog humanly. You should show that you have in the past cared for dogs to the standard military dogs require care for example police and rescue dogs. The National K-9Enforcement Organization, the agency that deals with the adoption of military dogs should be contacted.

In the process of military dog adoption, one has to agree not to put any blame on the government in case the dog causes any harm after being adopted. And since these dogs at times are aggressive due to past experiences, one has to be ready to deal with that. In general, these dogs are way better than regular dogs in terms of discipline.
