Secure Canine Health With Made In USA Dog Treats

By Odessa Edwards

In recent years consumers have become ever more conscious about dog foods made abroad. For canine owners the current trend is to purchase only products made in USA dog treats. This seems to be a result of recent scares and recalls in dog food that began in 2007, with the deaths of several dogs, and other incidents only last year in which thousands of dogs were killed or injured by eating imported treats.

The contaminated treats were made in China, and caused dogs kidney failure after eating them. Since then there has been an increased effort from pet owners to focus more on what foods have in them and where they were manufactured. This was especially true after the USA Federal Drug Administration issued a warning to pet owners advising them not to buy products made in China.

Following these events the improved consumer efforts to read labels for what is contained in foods, and labels of manufacturing before purchasing has resulted. An effort of some domestic food makers to include American flags next to company names has only added to that. Such marketing efforts remind pet owners that products made in USA are still much better than saving pennies, and trading health.

There is also the fact that ingredients in foods outside the USA is harder to trace because not all companies abroad use the same additives for stabilizing. There are also questions about chemical additives and if they are listed on the package, or used in combination with others. Within the USA manufacturers and labeling are in compliance with federal and domestic law. This also applies to pet food and treats.

The issue of alternate chemicals used in preservation outside the USA was focused on as a possible culprit in recalls by FDA scientists testing foods. After testing, they discovered that melamine crystals in wheat gluten were the responsible factor in ill dogs. This chemical is not used in the America to preserve foods, but is used in some countries abroad.

Wheat gluten is used abroad and in the United States as a compound in food. Gluton results when starch is taken out of wheat flour. It is used in the cooking process of gravy in animal food. It was the preservative contained in the gluten that was the problem, not the flour itself.

In 2012 the FDA were investigating the cause of animals who had experienced kidney problems and failure after eating. They had developed Fanconi-like syndrome after eating the treats. This included vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption and urination.

While no manufacturer, no matter where the products are manufactured, can claim no contamination will ever occur in consumable products, the incident of it is greatly reduced in USA due to federal regulations. While all consumable products may be subject to the possibility for contamination, at the present pet owners still trust and feel more comfortable, at least for now, with made in USA dog treats.
